I have a mid 60,s KB 5x14, would trade for 6.5...very nice shape.
Aren't 6.5 acros extremely rare and really pricey? Good luck.
Not sure about price, but there are fewer of them. I,d consider a new model which should reflect in the price. 60,s acros are hard to find in very good condition.
I believe the only vintage 6.5 acros were ordered by the NYC board of education for the schools. It'd be cool to find a vintage one.
The "cheapest" 6.5x14 Acrolite is going to be a 90's Black Galaxy. If you can find one, it will be in the $300+ dollar range. Of course the reissues are available new at around $425. If you are lucky enough to find a vintage Keystone or B/O badge one, you'll be looking at the $1000+ range.
That being said, many 5x14 60's acrolites are out there, and unless absolutely flawless, they go for less than $300. In fact, there is a 1964 (COB hoops) listed for sale on this forum for $200.
Good luck with your search!
Shameless picture of my '76 NYC Bd of Ed:
Rotarded is correct. I've found a few Black Galaxy 6.5s in the 275-350 range over the years. I've found a couple of nice used newer 6.5 Acros in the classic finish in the 300 range as well.
Who knew an 1.5" could make that much difference!!...These 5" Acros sound brilliant, I was just tossing the idea around.
Plus the 6.5 Acros are 10 lug instead of 8.
I had one and I can’t say they did anything for me. I thought maybe the 6.5 would, but then I realized there are so many other drums I’ve never even given a shot.
It's hard to beat the sound of a run-of-the-mill 5x14 60's Acro, so the huge price difference between depths definitely has to do with things other than sound. Things like rarity and overall cool factor are the biggest part of it. It would have been cool to buy up a bunch of them before they were discovered by collectors, but back in the day who could have known?
Mike, just curious, how many 6.5 Acros do you have? I think I remember you posting pics of several over the past few years.
Can you imagine if Ringo played and Acrolite
Happy New Year Gary! In the deep Acros, I have three currently. I have a Black Galaxy, a 70's NYC BD of ED, and a 60's Keystone badge model.
Al Jackson jr's Stax Records kit complete w Keystone Acro. Price just went up !
Nice to see. He,s got that muffler up nizintite to the head to...no ring!
Nice collection! Happy new year to you too Mike!
