I'm old enough to remember when they were the next big thing . My 13" Slingerland 3 ply Blackrome sounds pretty darn good with the CS it came with and I'm thinking of buying one for the 16" floor tom .

    What do you think ?

CS are classic heads - and they seemed to work well for Tony.
    Go for it!

I am putting together a vintage Gretsch kit in natural finish (which I am also refinishing)......13/16/22 (and a 12 for fun!) - the drums will all have clear black dots over clear ambassadors.........I'm looking very forward to the vintage look and sound!

My only, admittedly 'vague', memory of them is that they sounded....erm....bad....

Maybe time to try them again?

    lol

The Clear CS Black Dot is currently my favorite snare batter head. For toms they're just as good as any other heads I've tried. I just put one on my floor tom for my home kit. I'm liking it.

I use the Clear CS on the Reso side of my 14” TRS floor tom . Adds some noticeable bottom end and focus .

I have a set on my clear vistas. They’re nice!

I have one on my 5” deep COB Powertone. I tried all the typical one-ply coated heads and though nice, I never heard anything unique or particularly special. As a goof I threw a clear CS on it and tuned it up to a medium tension. Whoa! The thing has a killer sounding throaty bark that just totally saturates the room with sonic goodness. I want to try one on my 6.5” deep phosphor bronze Legend next.

Always. Best sounding head ever made. I recently bought 75 14,15,16,18,20 and 40 22 and 10 6,8,10,12,13 from cascio when they had a 22% off. I wanted to stock up before internet tax starts and head prices go up. I also bought 300 pair of sticks. I'm broke and homeless now and the ox left me. tama overhead 4.jpg

P.S. I also bought a ton of the Evans Red hydros for the reso side of toms and bass drums.

Like many drummers who came up during the 70s, I ran CS Blackdot batters on everything; snare, toms & bass drum.
They were very popular then, along with Ludwig Silverdots.

Nowadays, I use 'em mostly as resonants on larger floor toms. As RickP noted they can add focus to FTs.
Currently I run two blackdots as resos on my Buddy Rich kit 16" twin floor toms with coated Emps on the batter side.
They sound perfectly focused with a hint of controlled Boom.
I'd try one on a snare again in a heartbeat if I had a 14" laying around.

Absolutely! Use them on my GMS birch kit 18, 12, 14. They sound fantastic and give that little set a whole lotta oomph.

I'm running a 13" CS Black Dot on a 7" x 13" steel snare. It sounds great. I bought it on a whim, remembering back 30+ years ago when they were all the rage. Guess what? They still are! Next head change, I'll go with a CS.

I use them from time to time. Especially on floor toms that don't seem to give me the deep punch that I desire. The black dot usually does the trick for me.

Running them right now top and bottom. Not shown (or played) the 10 & 12. I really dig them. Bright and full and quite a bit of control. I might use a dot on the floor depending on the room. Easy to tune and durable. Probably get them again when the time comes.

I love them for batters on my toms paired with Diplomat reso's. They cut the highs just enough to take out the ring but don't deaden the decay the way that Emp's do.

I used to like Pinstripes but lately, they seem to go "bad" quickly.

After reading through the thread, the concept of using one as a reso on floor toms has me intrigued.

FYI: for those who dont like the BLACK dots, REMO still does manufacture the CS heads with white or and clear dots!

Also have a RB natural refin in the works, will have black dots all around because why not?

Used to be you could order Remo in black with a white dot, but I don't see them on the website or remember how the model # broke down. I'm not crazy about black heads generally, but I always thought these looked bitchin'. Like a black suit & shirt with white tie/belt/shoes.

Same with me. I use them on the bottoms of all my toms, racks and floors.
