Trying to get a nice low rumble sound from my 16" Ayotte tom. Swore I could get this sound before. There is an Ambassador Clear batter on the resonant side and I have tried Aquarian Texture Coated and currently have an Aquarian Studio X on the batter side. I had Evans EC1's on it that I really liked but they have stopped making them. All I can find is the EC2 which is too dead and plasticy sounding for me. It is just sounding off. I have been trying same tuning top and bottom although I usually tune the bottom just slightly higher. I have gone really low and higher than I would like just trying to get a good clear tone out of it. I haven't really had this problem before. Some of it might be my new Jenkins Martin 16" you can almost just set a head on it and it sounds great. I am wanting to take the Ayottes out for some gigs but need to get this 16 sounding good before I do. Any ideas?

Thanks man. They only have 16's and 12's I believe. I am little concerned about committing to drumheads that I can't get. I hate when they discontinue a favorite.

    Maybe try a 2-ply reso.

My favorite big floor Tom sound is coated G2 over coated G1. The coated head on the bottom gives a lot of warmth, and allows it to be tuned lower. Still tons of tone in that combo. Sounds huge.

Try a Remo CS Blackdot on the bottom.

Thanks for all of the feedback on this. I just spent a bunch of time carefully tweaking lugs to get them all matched around the head, top and bottom. Got it singing well again. It is interesting how this drum seems to need to be spot on to sound good. When it is on it is an amazing sounding drum but man it can take some precision to get it dialed. Played my Ayottes at our gig last night and wow do I love the sound and feel of these drums. They make a great compliment to the Jenkins Martin kit. Now I just need to figure out how and why to add an INDe kit. Thanks again for the tips. Still want to try with thicker/2ply reso heads.

I just ordered one to see how it sounds against my Evans hydraulic head.

Any thoughts on that? Will I leave it on? :)

This has worked for me every time on many 16s
Works wonders for 14 floor as well
