I don't know about no musical talent. Weren't they pretty instrumental in shaping the whole concept of "It sounds just like the record live"? That takes a lot of practice and commitment to hone your performance. A committed talent for crap, but an admirable commitment nonetheless.

I'm not even sure I can say they had no musical taste, either. They knew exactly what they were doing, and were capable of calculating every bit of their musical appeal with a professional's precision, so in technical terms I guess that means they actually had an incredible sense of taste. It's just such a shame their good taste was so bad.

Never liked Kiss. All show and no musical ability.

I actually like KISS! Seen em in concert several times and they always put on a good show. However that song has got to be near the bottom of the pile in my opinion.

I think one of the problems with KISS, aside from the blatant commercial pageantry, is that they pale in comparison to the rest of the rock pantheon. They don’t have a Let it Bleed, Zeppelin III, Moving Pictures or Master of Reality in them. That doesn’t mean Detroit Rock City is a bad song… it just isn’t a masterpiece.

There are a couple of their tunes that are fun when they come on the radio. Not my cup of tea, but they tap into an era and I bask in it while it's playing.

Mostly I just have a lot of respect for their work ethic, talent and business acumen. Not a lot of bands stay largely together as long, have as focused an artistic model, or the shrewd capacity to know how to sell it. They practically reinvented live show expectations, they practically invented the classic rock retro comeback, and long after most glam theatrics of the 70s have faded from memory, everyone still knows at least 3 of those 4 costumes. It's impressive.

Well said.

I am by no means a fan of their music or of their musicianship.

But I have a ton of respect for them as a business unit and their overall professionalism. I have read a number of reviews from members of other groups who played and/or toured with them over the years and they all raved about how respectful and supportive they were to new and upcoming bands. And that they always demonstrated a deep level of professionalism and passion for their overall product, meaning their live shows, merchandise, and overall band image.

And those same reviewers, by contrast, had much less positive feedback to share about other successful bands who may have been better known for their musical prowess than KISS.

Business sense and professional respect over technical mastery of the instrument seems to be a winning ticket, at least in this case.

100% agree. Imagine an industry where every band had that attitude.

They certainly aren't technical musicians by any stretch, and honestly I don't even know if they can't play tougher or just choose not to, but the dedication to rehearse the heck out of their sound is admirable. I mean, we take it for granted now that a quality tribute act is going to slave away to get every detail just right, and even the original bands will admit the tributes sound tighter than they ever did. But who of note was really doing that before Kiss? They were like a tribute act to themselves.

They’re the kind of act that could get away with franchising and have multiple tours happening at the same time. I could picture an East Coast and West Coast franchise meeting in, say, Kansas City or Chicago and then deciding which of them goes where next.

It’s not like Yes and Pink Floyd didn’t already do this in a way. They may not have been quite as amical as what I’m proposing for KISS but you get my point.

I can't believe that Gene Simmons hasn't tried that already, he can never have too many millions it seems.

Love KISS or hate them (I'm a lover), they have written some great rock and roll songs and really raised the bar for live shows over their many years, they deserve much respect. Plus, how many bands do you know that have managed to have about eight farewell world tours?

Haven't read through the list, so I'm guessing these were mentioned.
Paradise By the Dashboard Lights
The Devil Went Down to Georgia
Can't You See (Marshall Tucker)
Sweet Home Alabama

They sure seem like they know how to play to me ?
They write a good hook .

Watch the Midnight Special clips they are tight as hell and have some impressive song ending arrangements…….

Does every band need to be virtuosos ?

If so , I need to sell my drums ……..

I disagree , That whole Destroyer album is definitely a masterpiece……..

If Shout It Outloud don’t get you pumped up you don’t like ice cream ..

Speaking of Destroyer, who came up with the melody first: “Beth what can I do” or “Folgers in your cup”?
