Hey guys, I was wondering what the noticeable differences are comparing the amount of strands on a snare strainer.
I'm especially interested in what a 42-strand sounds like compared to a 20.
I'm just shopping round and trying to decide logically.
Thanks.

I don't get the 42 strand thing. To me it says the drum it's on fundamentally lacks something to need that. 20 or 16 on a snare makes a snare sound like a snare without an overbearance of BOOOOOOOSH. But hey, try it and see what you think.

They have a lot more "BOOOSH".

Seriously, it's a completely different sound. Tommy Wells mentioned liking them on an Acro and I agree. Especially if you can find some 30 strand steel Metrix. Other than that, I do not like them on metal drums.

Some Gretsch snares have super wide beds specifically intended to accommodate 42 strand wires.

Your tuning will likely be different too. Generally lower. If you have the money, it is well worth the $20 experiment. Cheaper if someone here has some used for sale.

So, how would you say this guy managed to get that tight snappy sound out of it.
