What are you using for reso? I have a Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple(10/12/13/16/22 w/matching snare)that asking/reading about head choices I got the Evans UV1 coated for batter. Still using the clear original reso heads that came w/set(thank you again Murat at Drummers Hangout!)and was wondering if any recommendations for reso. Open to hearing about other head choices as well.
Thank you in advance.

Coated G1s on the bigger drums (13/16). Still have the original resos on the bop kit. I have a shell bank of AHMs but I really only play them as a rock kit (13/16/22) and a jazz kit (12/14/18).

They basically respond to bottom heads exactly like a single ply coated head would, in my experience.

What is wrong with the factory reso heads?

What do you want your drums to sound like?
- A shorter note?
- A longer note?
- To tame overtones?
- A rounder/warmer tone?

Hard to give you any advise without knowing what you are looking for.

Don’t think anything wrong w/ factory reso heads. Interested in hearing different thoughts/options from others.

I’m used to either Coated Remo Amb. over Coated Dips or Amb’s. Couple of years ago I went to Aquarian Coated as not much luck w/the Remo coating especially on snare, but still like the Remo head sound. Bass drums I’ve been using Aquarian Superkick1 w/ Aquarian Regulator on reso.

I play in one steady band and 5 others as a hired gun. I just acquired the 13” rack Tom and will drop the 10” so 12/13/16. This set is used mostly for a 70’s and up country music in one band, and the other band is quite a mix including music from Santana/ZZ Top/Classic Rock/etc.

To answer your question and thank you for the reply, I do tend to like a deeper sound w/a longer note and rounder tone, best I can describe. I’ve played mostly all vintage sets(and still do)in my 52 years of playing and in a 4 pc. configuration down to just a snare for some Honky Tonk or Western Swing bands. This Yamaha 5 pc. is the most drums in a set I’ve played.

Thanks once again to all who replied.

With the sound preferences you described, my first thought would be a G1 clear for the reso head. It’s going to give that classic, open tone with nice body.

I haven't had a chance to try a UV1. I had one UV2 and felt it deadened every snare I tried it on -- wood an metal.

I recommend Aquarian, personally. But YMMV.

But a coated head would give a more “rounded” tone. Compared to a 10mil head, in theory, a thinner head (7mil) will provide better articulation but will have a shorter sustain because there is less mass to keep the head vibrating. A heavier/thicker head (12mil) should ring a bit longer as it has inertia on its side. A coated head should damp some higher overtones and give the drum that rounded/warmth you may be looking for.

I think of Evans vs Remo as a “studio” vs “live” sound. I find Evans collar design and mylar to naturally have a bit less ring to it than Remo heads do, so a coated G1 will have less higher pitched overtones than a coated Ambassador. If we apply the head thickness theory to this, a single ply, coated 12mil head will have more sustain than the 10mil version but theoretically the Remo Ambassador X should ring out more than the Evans G12.

If you go 2 ply you may add more thuddyness to the sound of the drum but that is a lot of head to activate and you now have 2 plys rubbing against each other trying to quell the sustain. Projection can sometimes be an issue as well so it may sound amazing to you, but the audience may not dig it.

Sounds like a drum did a lot of good videos about reso heads that may help you. Have a look through their videos here:

As an Aquarian/Weather master loyalist, I recently switched to Evans G1 coated batters for my snares.
I had all the snares with Aquarian texture coated or Ludwig WM's and had never tried anything Evans.
Bought a couple on sale while searching for new Weather Master heads (which are too expensive now) and found them to be almost exactly like the WM's. The WM's for me were always a notch up from the Aquarian TC's and the Evans G1 has the same feel as the Ludwig's for less money. Great natural & lively sound and that soft feel that the Ludwig's have!
I always found the Aquarian TC's a little on the stiff side but they're definitely the most durable. We'll see how the Evans hold up!
As for reso's, I've left most of the Aquarian classic clear snare sides or Ludwig WM snare sides and they sound fine with the Evans on top. I did buy and try two Evans 300 snare sides and they also work well.
I think any of the snare sides from any brand are pretty much equal!
I yet to try a UV1 though and probably wont since the G1's are really good.
I suppose the G1's will not sound deadened as compared to the UV2's that you tried since the G1 is single ply!
As for toms & Kick, I love my Aquarian's for those and doubt I'll ever switch!

Thank you. From what I’ve read and listened to yes, UV2 have that trait. I’ll take a listen to the video.

I have never used the Aquarian heads for other than the bass drum. Something else to check out.

Thank you for the information/education.
Never knew about that site and will look into it tonight.

I use UV1s on snare and toms...Mostly 4 piece 60's and early 70's Slingerland 3-ply kits. I like the Evans reso 7 heads, but clear G1s would be good. I also want to experiment with Remo smooth white Ambassadors on the bottom. I use no muffling on toms, so I like the ring and sustain.

If you want to stick with 10mil clear and 12/13/16 its hard to beat the value of the attack proflex pre packs. I have them as resonant heads on one kit and like them.
