If they were mine I'd go with silver glass glitter but because it's Chris, it has to be blue! I voted Sky Blue Pearl.

I suggest you cover them in paper-backed maple or oak veneer, and then dye them blue with Woodburst dye. Follow up with either a tung oil or poly finish.

You know me all to well greggp, I'm leaning that way because I want to keep these and probably the only way I'll keep them is if they are some variant of "blue shadow"
Will post in the builder section too.... but would I dye before or after putting the veneer on the drums?

I think I would dye afterwards. I'd be concerned about messing it up during the wrapping process.

I'm pretty sure you can get veneer with a peel-and-stick adhesive from Rockler, and probably some other places.

I'd go with orange sparkle. Not on the list though.

Since you are in or near Austin, I would also recommend Orange Glass Glitter. The suggestion about having an auto painter work on them is even more appealing. The painter should be able to duplicate UT's burnt Orange. You'd be a hit playing gigs on campus at fraternity house parties, etc. And, if you're in to weirdness, you could wrap them very easily with Orange Satin Flame.

But, if you're a Ludwig purist, why not just do the drums justice with either solid black wrap or painted in high gloss Piano Black lacquer.

Sky blue pearl and champagne sparkle scream vintage. for some reason i picture smaller jazz sizes in champagne. For those sizes i would get a darker red sparkle of some sort or the sky blue pearl.

SILVER GLASS GLITTER . . . if you play under colored lights silver is the best glitter under colored lights . . . you can make your kit what every color you want by adding light . . . silver catches and reflects beautifully . . . . . I love glitters . . . my next choices would be (1) green, (2) red, (3) blue . . . . NAD

I was also thinking about lighting as well. Any thoughts about which color neutralizes or whitens up the fading of vintage WMP? Mine is really more of a "green marine" pearl these days (or ginger ale). There's nothing I can do about the raw color, but lighting can do wonders.
