Hi all,
I recently acquired a 21” Bourgis cymbal in a trade with a forumite. It’s really amazing - it’s an ideal 21” left side ride; it has great stick, balanced wash, is super low tension and crashable, and has a great bell. I’ve seen Bourgis mentioned a few times on the forum, but in my limited experience here his name doesn’t seem to come up as much as some of the other independent makers.
Just curious if other folks have played Bourgis cymbals, and what their thoughts are. I’m not sure whether my perception is accurate that he is more “under the radar” than other independent folks, but if that’s the case then we need to spread the word, because he is one of the best in my opinion!
Here’s a video he put out today:

Hi Luke happy you enjoy it, def Mattia makes some great pies :) I had an OS 22 clone and really enjoyed it and I had the chance to play another 22 and that one also was great. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to try out Mattia Bourgis cymbals..

I have this one, and would love to have another to pair with it. It has a higher profile, but still crashes well.
Definitely keep an eye on him.

That one sounds beautiful. I just started following him so I might be wrong, but it seems like a high percentage of his cymbals have a high profile and the nice definition, “ta” sound, and “dragons breath”iness that can come with it. Which I personally love in a left side ride.

That 21" is very nice!

What weight is your 21”? Do you have a soundfile of it?

I met him on last year and I’ve visited his workshop in Rome.
He’s making very fine instruments. A true passionate cymbal maker and musician (and a very nice guy to deal with).
Don’t hesitate to try his creations!

I thought he was in Tenerife , Canary Islands ? Did he move ?

He

He moved back to Tenerife again. He’s there now
I've recently been in contact with him about a cymbal . He has been in Rome for about a week and will return to Tenerife on the 6th . He really is " under the radar " here as Luke wrote but not just here judging by the little info/feedback I've seen on the net .

This is mine! He really nails the tension/feel of an old K. Something I find missing in a lot of custom cymbalsmiths.
I have this one:

Mattia's video captures the sound accurately. It's an amazing cymbal, and I'd like to explore more of his work.
Wow ! I dig this cymbal . Thanks for sharing !

I biought this one, and then commisioned a 19" and pair of 14" hats. IIRC the hats were one of the first Hand Formed Bell pairs. Mayne even the first??
Mattia is one hell of a nice guy and a pleasure to deal with . His cymbals are on the high end price-wise , say , compared to Funch , but I've heard nothing but praise from guys who have bought his cymbals . I commissioned a cymbal from him ( he made two for me to choose from ) which he just last week finished up and am in the process of deciding if I want to go ahead with the purchase . He offers a refund of the deposit if one chooses to pass . Very satisfactory way to do business . He knows he can sell !
