How Fast Do You Expect a Seller to Ship a Purchase?

I go by the time allocated on the ebay or Reverb listing. That's up to 5 business days. I've sold things and had people reach out in less than 24 hours asking why it hasn't shipped and I'm not going to lie it does annoy me. I usually have everything ready to go but I work nights and my only time to sleep is during normal business hours so it takes me sometimes 3-4 days when I'm off work to be able to ship.

If I'm selling on Reverb, I have the box and packaging ready to go. It should be dropped off at the shipper within 24 hours, and I'll answer any and every email I receive from the buyer as quickly as possible.

I expect the same as a buyer.

I am usually a seller on Reverb, shipping out the day I get the payment or the following day. I recently purchased an item on Reverb from a seller that had a lot of transactions. Reverb listed this seller as a fast shipper. 3 days after they received my payment - they still did not ship the item so I messaged them thru Reverb. They got back to me a said it will go out tomorrow (day 4). I got the item and it was as described. Reverb sent me the feedback and I gave this seller 4 out of 5 stars. I said the item was great but they were a little slow on shipping it. This erupted a storm with the seller. He emailed me back calling me many things and said he would never sell me anything again. A few days after the first email, I received another calling me more things (which I am not mentioning here). I could not justify 5 out of 5 rating with me having to remind him to ship the item.

I know we've all become spoiled in the days of same-day delivery, but I'm curious about how fast a seller should be expected to ship a purchase. I think within 24 hours is fast, within 72 hours is reasonable and anything more is slow. I know the various carriers vary in speed and reliability, but sellers should do their part in a timely manner.
I would come to an agreement in advance.

I never list anything for sale until it's packed and only needs the buyer's address. It's B.S. that a seller waits for the payment to clear before looking for packaging materials, especially for bulky items like drum gear.

ePrey sellers are starting to peeve me. I am seeing more sellers taking up to a week or more to ship. Hardly anything arrives when the listing says it will. I am starting to give Neutral or Negative seller ratings based on how fast they ship.
I agree with this however, I have gotten the “can I see a picture of the bearing edges?” and now it’s already boxed up. I ship in 2-3 business days unless I’m out of town and am completely upfront with buyers. I’m not a retailer and fortunately don’t sell a lot.

I order a good amount of RC Airplane parts, and most orders are shipped the same day unless I wait too late in the day to order. I order everything standard delivery and receive most items in about 3 days and sometimes the next day. Depending on the location of origin I've had some that may take a week to get.

Ops! Guess I misunderstood your question. I was talking about a regular retail outlet with, in stock items.

Individual seller? Or retailer?

I have made the mistake as an individual seller of listing things without having the boxes ready. Or maybe I had a box that I thought worked but find out that it doesn't. Or maybe I thought I had a week or two before it sells and someone buys it in the first three hours. So I have taken sometimes up to four or five days to get it to UPS.

But I always, always, always, always tell buyer that's what the problem is, and I thank them for their understanding and their patience. Especially with cymbals, because if you don't have a cymbal box ready, it can be hard to find something suitable.

I think next day expectations are a little unreasonable, even for retailers. If it goes out in a couple days, I'm generally pretty chill. Clearly not everyone here feels the same way.
I agree completely. I’ve often posted items on multiple sites such as eBay, Reverb, Sweetwater used, Craigslist and Marketplace. Therefore I don’t generally prepare the item in case I end up selling it locally. The other matter has been having the appropriate box to ship the item in. That has definitely happened that just don’t have that box on hand, and I’m waiting a day for an Amazon delivery. Buying and selling is not my day job and I don’t typically consider it a revenue generating venture.

However, I am meticulous in communication with the buyer. Whenever I receive an order I immediately message the buyer thanking them for the purchase and provide an estimated shipping date. If there’s a delay I immediately communicate that.

For me as the buyer… yeah, I want my stuff but I also try to remember that this is all just STUFF, not life and death. If someone delays in shipping my purchase I tell myself that this is a a first-world problem. I’ve never been actively scammed on any of these platforms.

Regarding the shipping of cymbals… go to your friendly, local pizza shop and nicely ask for an appropriate sized box. The place I regularly patronize have graciously given me a box three times.

I sell fairly regularly on REVERB... Totally agree with your 4-star.

Sellers... If you are gonna be out of town, SHUT DOWN THE AD TILL YOU ARE HOME!

If you are in the habit of waiting 3-5 days to ship your sold item, you can expect the buyer to be frustrated and/or leave less than perfect feedback.

I really believe, that as a conscientious seller, you should make EVERY ATTEMPT to ship the sold item the next business day.

I would really like to think communication is key, but with some of the responses I just don't know.

Let's say I have something on Reverb for a couple weeks, or even months. A guy finally buys it on Wednesday night. I've got a doctor's appointment and things to do on Thursday so I can't get it out on Thursday. I'm taking an early flight on Friday morning for weekend gigs so it can't go out Friday or Saturday. Best case scenario is I fly home on Sunday, pack on Monday morning and get it to the shipper on Monday afternoon. Or if Monday's busy then Tuesday. We're talking four, possibly five days before it goes out. Strictly do to a weekend, touring work schedule, and the timing of when the buyer purchased ,and of course life.

And so I would need to communicate this to the buyer....Hey, I'm sorry it's gonna be four days till I can get this box in over to the shipper.

So is it the lack of communication that is the problem ? or the four or five days because of life and people's schedules is just completely unacceptable to some of you ?

Funny to think a guy used to roam the countryside with the Sears and Roebuck catalog and you had to wait and hope that whatever you ordered would arrive.

Now you don't get your payout until you have shipped.

Reverb Policy: existing sellers should see the money processed within 5 business days of the item being in-transit. So, to get paid, you have to purchase the shipping label and/ or show shipped and the tracking.

Reverb requires that all shipments are made and tracking information on orders is updated within 3 business days of receiving payment. The 3 biz days means 3 biz days from when buyer remits. You don't get paid until you have shown item is in transit. That's when your get paid clock starts. The shipping interval clock starts at time buyer remits payment.

Within minutes!! Yeah I know, I'm entitled and spoiled rotten; it's something you never grow out of. Who knew?

I've always shipped things next business day after receiving payment and expect others to do the same. I think once you post something for sale you should be ready to complete the deal.
What Redbeard said: I pride myself on shipping anything I’ve sold as quickly as is humanly possible once the funds have cleared. I operate on the principle of ‘do unto others…..’

Well,i have you all beat….I purchased a 70’s Premier set from a lady in Indiana off Marketplace…..She did not want to ship..so i asked if I added $100 to it,would she do it..? She said yes……Ended up taking almost exactly 2 MONTHS to get my drums!…She sent in 2 boxes that I paid for at her UHAUL……plus..bubble wrap tape etc..She has 6 kids to look after she said..plus…her car broke down…Uhaul was out the the boxes….etc….Most people would have said…send my money back!…But….i stood to make some nice coin…so I rode it out…I just ordered another 60’s -70’s Prem set Sunday….and the guy sent it the next day….and..within 1-3 hours ….UPS should be at my door with them!

Incidentally, this thread was inspired by an order that I've since found out shipped within less 24 hours but hasn't been updated on my end in the three days since. The seller checked with the postal service and it shows as being at a distribution center. So, on one hand, the postal service stinks, but on the other hand, it's nice to find a good retailer.
The seller dropped off the package in California on Saturday and the status never progressed beyond label created until it arrived at the Chicago distribution center today. I don't envy anyone who has to rely on the USPS for their business.

If I'm selling something I have it ready to ship when it's listed and when it's sold I make it to the post office within 24 hours. Trying to hold other people up to that same standard is just asking to be frustrated, so I try to be patient when waiting on a shipping notification for something I've bought. Generally, I'll give them three days before I message and ask what the hold up is, unless they've already communicated that there would be a delay.

I sell quite a bit of stuff on Reverb. I purchase too, but I think I'm pretty much done with that...for now.

All of my listings are already boxed up ready to go. I typically ship out the day of or the next day. My first message to the buyer usually lets them know when I'm shipping. I've had only one sale where I was out of town on vacation and couldn't ship immediately. My dumb fault for keeping the ad up then... But I was transparent with the buyer and luckily they were cool with it shipping out a few days after the purchase.

I never list anything for sale until it's packed and only needs the buyer's address. It's B.S. that a seller waits for the payment to clear before looking for packaging materials, especially for bulky items like drum gear.

Only problem with boxing up before an actual sale with payment occurs is if a potential buyer asks a question you cannot answer w/o re-opening the package. And when it's me asking the question it sort of stinks when they say it's already packed up, "sorry." A particular problem with cymbals when you're asking for a sound file when there wasn't one yet. Or some other features of the cymbal the seller didn't bother to think of or mention. If you're spending $250-$500 a cymbal, those details often matter.

Reverb lists 3 business days as the shipping guideline. After that, the seller should notify the buyer when they'll get to it. Some sellers gig every day of the
week and don't get to ship out but one day of the week. But, they usually tell you that up front. I used to adhere to the next business day rule as I was often going out daily. But the past couple years being retired, I might only get out 2-3 days in some weeks. And when an order is a $10-$15 item, I'm likely to wait 2-3 days just to coincide with my next car trip. I will probably break even on that $15 order when it's combined with other trips. On a solo trip that's $5-$10
of gas/wear & tear on the car, making that dedicated "gear" trip/transaction a loser. If someone mentions that they really need to have an item asap to meet a gigging deadline or something, I will certainly accommodate them. What if an item is ordered on Friday and you get sick Sat/Sun? That's happened to me. You shouldn't have to run out sick by Monday or Tuesday to meet some arbitrary 1 or 2 business day window....when Reverb says 3 days is fine.
