I've had at least seven Gretsch kits in my 40 year journey playing drums. Obviously I'm a huge Gretsch fan. Because of my G.A.S affliction, unfortunately, I've let them pass to others.

So, recently I hit the button on yet another USA Custom kit... It turned out not to be a custom but an early Renown. I was able to back out of the deal and then hit the button on a new Renown Purewood African Mahogany kit. A six piece kit, new for $1490 including shipping.

I have to say, this kit is a wonderful kit. Warm, punchy, basically everything I look for in a kit. Along with my Tempus CF kits, this is definitely a keeper. If anyone sees me trying to sell it, please, please, call the authorities for I would be insane in my membrane!

Bottom line, this Renown kit is just as nice as any Gretsch kit I've owned (including the USA Maples and USA Customs I've owned) IMHO.

Any other Renown lovers (or haters out there?)

BTW, Peeler Music where I bought it from (via eBay), recently sent me a brand new bass drum hoop to replace the damaged hoop I reported on. Props to them! Great CS! Thanks for the heads up Norm!

Dan,

Thanks for the heads up on the Gretsch Renown kit . Great to hear that customer service is still alive in custom drum shops.
Although G.A.S. is a terminal condition there are far worse afflictions!

That is a great kit and I'm glad you got that hoop thing sorted out. I borrowed a renown kit from my shop a few months ago whilst I was having toms re-edged. They are absolutely the best kits out there for the money. I just wish they made my sizes.

I have used the "hard to find sizes" with the renown patch I find them to be excellent. and a lot less expensive than vintage.

unfortunately only in burst colors now........i bought (stole) a cranberry red renown from drum hq in st louis 5 pc kit sans snare for 499 bucks...........only difference in this and customs are 2 plies of gumwood versus 2 plies of maple........all 6ply thin shells with die cast......

Hi, I'm new here.

Anyway, I feel like my Renown Purewood Mahogany is the best sounding kit in the world. I got the big sizes a couple years ago (24" bass drum) and I go to my rehearsal space everyday to play them. Sometimes I just go to hang out and drink beer with them though. One thing that I've found though is that there is no information or reviews on them anywhere. Not that I need them. . . I suppose having only made sixty of these kits, I have more of a responsibility to be a reviewer. Oh well, I just felt like saying how much I love them. Dark and boomy. That's sort of my sound in a nutshell. I also use 3 vintage Zildjian cymbals that I purchased at the same time. The ride is made in canada and they all sound great to me.

Dan,

A few months ago, I did a show with country singer Jeff Bates. His drummer Wesley and I really hit it off. We became instant friends. He let me play his Gretsch Renowns and man was I impressed. The kit was as good as any high-end Gretsch kit. In fact, I would put it up against any Gretsch kit out there. These drums are Amazing!!!!!! :notworthy:

I own a renown bop set 16 x 18, 8 x 12 , 14 x 14 in dark walnut, virgin kick & new style hardware.

I LOVE THEM.

They are top shelf drums, my kick has a PS3 Coated and Fiberskyn resonant head, no muffling other than the PS3 ring......it booms, the kick sounds so wide and open and you can feel the lows in your chest without the drum sounding overly aggressive.

Now I know why guys go crazy over 18" kicks, it's because they react so well....feather the kick and you get plenty of bass response - The kick can be tuned high or low, and you don't need to internally muffle. If you keep them open, the kick will never ring too much.

I bought them in March.

Mine are dark walnut but have that Red tone.....

The bop sets now come standard in dark walnut and white marine pearl.....they used to come with a tom mount in the kick, now they are virgin. I assume you can special order the mount it if you really want.

Inca Gold just came out.....it's so nice.....(!)

There's also more limited edition finishes in the 14 x 18" sets that were released in Japan by their distributors Kanda Shokai - check em out. Here's the flyer

One of these finishes is Black Swirl.... (ick...)

Are the Renowns available in a wrap?

They are available stock WMP in a 18" bop set............I'm interested to see if someone can get a custom order done. They've certainly done it before

Is it the perspective or is that ahuge cymbal or what? Cool set up real jazzy look to it. Thats the "proud father " grin if I've ever seen one. :D

Dan,

I only get the dreaded Red X when I try to view your new Gretsch Renown's. Also, just viewed the "Kits I've owned in the past",...spectacular drummage...you are definately "high-end" oriented...doesn't appear to be a clam in the bunch. Wow...you have played on some of the best sets avilable in this generation.... nice.

Lately I've been practicing a bit too much at home (Leedy/Oly/RC's).... I think the family has grown tired...I see you have a TD-12 for home practice...wonder if you could start a thread sometime on the pros and cons and how you use it ? What to look for...and problem areas....I am a total electronica neophyte.

Thanks.

Peace, Chas

We got in one of the mahogany purewood sets in the 24/13/16 config. That kit RULED. If I hadn't've had a same sized kit, I would have bought the Gretsches. That kit had BALLS

Thanks! I fixed the pic. I love the TD-12 but the brain is at the rehearsal space. I recently unloaded the TD-10 brain as I didn't care for the antiquated sounds compared to the 12...

No, Benny, not the perspective...that's a 24" Dream 1/2 bell ride (think minicup)...and man, I am proud to play it...smokin'!!
