So this should be the 40th entry on a thread started a few hours ago. I think we're alright...
Damn, the_dude snarked my 40th slot while I was typing...

Or should I say, the_dude abides in the 40th slot?

Facebook groups have siphoned off users of forums in all areas of interest. And it's a real shame because Facebook groups don't lend themselves to long form discussion and searchable information. Some Facebook groups are worse than others, but holy crap are some of the drumming related ones bad.

This is by far my favorite forum. Lots of great guys and info here. I hope it's not dying out myself. Facebook just isn't the same.

There's a good number of long term members that used to post often and I see them hardly ever. I miss them too. Then again, some that I hated are gone also. Laugh! There is a Houston area FB group for Rogers Drum Owners that does not change my DFO habit. Ace
P.S. When Tommy Wells passed, that knocked the wind out of the forum sails.

As a new member and long-time drummer getting back into playing on a more frequent and regular basis, I have enjoyed reading the posts and learning different perspectives and posting as I can and see there is value. Thanks to all.

I love this place! It’s like home to me and when it’s down, I miss it...bad. Call me a fan boy! I guess I am.
Me too.
Here's my soapbox: i like being positive here, and keeping it mostly to drums. I am grateful for this forum. I have learned a lot, and through this forum, I was able to meet and hang out with Tommy Wells years ago. We talked about this forum, and he advised me to "take the high road and leave the rest." Spoken like a true pro. I have not always done that, but I have most of the time. I love it here when we talk drums. I am uninterested in almost any other subject here, even sports, because politics eventually gets drawn in to any discussion that even gets close to money. But to keep it positive, you guys & gals have taught me a lot here. Thanks to everyone who keeps it happenin'.

i was pissed off when they banned smoking in here , but i'm over it now , so i usually check in daily ....

I lurk around more for the sights,ie pics of drums, than to post.
Its all been said over the decades from DCI to DFO and beyond.
I chk it every morning and evening.
Not as active,that seems true,Steve!

I can think of no better place to hang and get my OCD drum tics soothed. Love the new format.
Now to go remeasure my seat height, swap out some drum heads, and re-examine my bearing edges.

I joined the Drumsmith forum about 11 years ago. As a weekend drummer I was happy to get access to a lot of very useful info and listen to wisdom from pros. I have never posted a lot but will if I think it is helpful. As I once read, something like,
“A wise man speaks when he has something to say, a fool speaks because he has to say something”
Drumsmith was, to me, a useful forum allowing me to buy and sell some drums at fair prices and meet some interesting fellow drummers. I’m aware a lot of people don’t think well of Ron Dunnett (I’ve never met him) but his forum was valuable to me.
I’m only on this forum because Drumsmith became a ghost town. It seemed to happen very quickly. I hope that doesn’t happen hear, but as the song says “all things must pass”. Agree FBook sucks as a forum, they only want your data.

As can be seen from my post count and "joined" date, I read a lot more than I write. And that's fine. I find the discussions about gigging, working with other musicians both within a band and as a freelance drummer, and other aspects of working as a drummer to be most valuable, since my working experience is limited (but growing).

Regarding "we've already covered that," sometimes topics need to be revisited. New products and advancing technology can render answers given a year or two ago inappropriate today. Updated facts and opinions have value.

Regarding the software changes, advertising, etc., no problems from me. Yeah, changes need getting used to, but without changes, we will never progress. Vintage drums may be fine, but vintage computers and software don't cut it. And the pop-ups and such were never a significant bother to me.

And last, any forum that routinely invokes The Big Lebowski has to be a keeper.

Interesting topic.

Yeah, could be for several reasons already mentioned above.
I work retail, in a music store, selling all kinds of new and used instruments, including drums, and I can say that business has slowed down. There are so many other places to find equipment [online stores, online FaceBook sights, every house in the US selling something on Craigslist, etc.] so I suppose the number of people here on DFO has also dropped accordingly.

Let me pose another question, and I'm not trying to hijack the thread. When you read a topic for the first time, do you read EVERY post, even if its more than one page worth? Or do you just jump in at the end and post your answer? The reason I ask is that many people today have a short attention span, and might not have the desire to read all of the posts of any given thread. So they might simply NOT get involved here?

I'm visiting less lately. Not sure all why. The new format maybe on a subconscious level. I'm not in the market for any gear which really drives me to read and research. Also like many here I've been reading this forum for over 15 years(!). So many topics I don't even open because they've been gone over before umpteen times. FB groups have taken some of my attention for sure.

Regardless, I still value this place.

I took a several month break. It's definitely down since then. I joined a couple various groups on FB but I've finally solidified my opinion that FB makes a crappy forum, and forums make crappy social media. They're not the same thing even though the marketing weenies like to pretend SM is the latest replacement for <insert previous format>. Especially since FB does a lousy job of segregating populations/interests.

+1. Spot on observations!
