Is DFO Dying Out? ...Nope!

I can give you all my take. I've been here about 15 years but now I don't input nearly as much. The feel has completely changed when Chris left. Nothing at all against Ben but now it feels like a money making tool when before it felt like a family. As a pure capitalist, I find no fault in that....just stating how I feel the overall vibe became.

Running a forum like this is a labor of love, not a profit making venture. I know people complain about the ads, but I seriously doubt they cover the costs of keeping this site up.

If there was money to be made in online hobbyist forums, Unilever, Facebook, organized crime, and all of Wall Street would be gibbering at the door wanting in on the action.
Heck, if there was even a decent tax write-off to be had from it they'd have a slice here or there.

Can we (safely?) assume Nacci's post was in jest? At least until he clarifies it for us.

Otherwise I wind up looking like an ass for "liking" his post-which I did because it was so obviously sarcastic and detrmental to our collective wellbeing that I burst out laughing when I read it...

If, by chance, Nacci steps in to say that he was indeed serious I will remove my "like this post"....."posthaste"....

Lol

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if this became one of the site’s longest posts?

Back in the day... as in Harry's day, I started a 'Thread Killer' thread where I felt that my hopelessly inadequate post, was the post that killed any interest in the thread. The response was overwhelming, as everyone, it seemed, felt the same. The thread went on and on and on forever, until, a mod eventually pulled the pin on it.

Anyway, I wonder whether the old DCI guard is either dying, retiring or not gigging any more (I'm in the last category) and the interest is becoming diluted. I think it's good that a new younger demographic is taking over from the good old boys.

Not that my presence was noteworthy, but the malware ads killed my participation. I check in every so often but got tired of having my browser redirected to some scam and the seeming accceptance of that as a new normal.

Didn’t trade for another venue, realized I had more time to practice and play music. I have generally withdrawn from most social media/forum sites as I realized in the last 18 months they weren’t filling my tank with much fuel.

In the last few months, I've been surprised to see the low number of posts compared to the past. I don't post unless I have something to say on a topic.
When we actually had forum meets (Thanks Chris and family BTW) meeting and hanging with members was the best part of being a member.
Dying? Nope, ebb and flow, come and go. A little more civility from a-holes might fuel better discussions, eh?
'If you can't say something good, don't say anything' is not a plea to be polite, it is just saying 'nobody wants to hear your opinion if negative.

Too funny, of course it was in jest Mongrel. Still this thread is a fine example that if you want some action around here post something provocative.

I'm no spring chicken but pretty new around here. I lurked every now and then to glean resto tips, drum ID info, etc for years. This forum has been invaluable to me for that alone. When I finally succumbed and joined I tried to tread lightly and not be the new neighbor that crashes your family barbecue to try and sell life insurance polices. You all have been more than welcoming and have even tolerated my horrible puns. Cheers to you all. I'm sticking around. I think it's likely that there will be an influx of more folks like me who have had to deal with real life in the past with no time for this type of addictive venue, but now have a bit of time to just hang out and enjoy the company.
Dave

PS: Get the duckduckgo browser for your phone. No ads. Nuthin'. They have add-ons for desktop browsers too.

Is anyone still having malware issues with the new format? It seems fast and lean and the ads are unobtrusive, as long as you set the view to Tablet, even on your desktop. The font is huge and as some have mentioned, a tad on the light side but totally readable to me. There are also a couple of new features that I find useful and like most new things, using the new format is becoming second nature to me.

Also, Chonson and a few others that see your presence as not being noteworthy, I was shocked to see that as most of you that claimed that seem to be valued participants in my eyes. I would like to see your post counts climb, personally.

i guess ive been lucky, because havent been having any tech or pop up problems .
but i do also view a half dozen specific facebook drum or drummer sites that serve a specific niche.
in spite of that none can compete with the much more well rounded subject matter and members here.
still as more new sites appear some members will drift, and some more so then others.
i read a lot more then i post ,and this forum continues to be my home base.

I do think the political crap that gets brought up here is an issue. The forum seems to lean to the right, at least in terms of what the admins/members tolerate. In our current climate, that can anger people. The "butthurt" comment would be accurate IF the admin allowed back and forth and only one side was upset. As it is, when things are perceived as not being neutral, people believe they can get their drum information needs met in other places where they don't have to deal with that kind of thing.
Okay, I see what you did there - you snuck in some politics!
...and since you did, I must say I haven't noticed the DFO administration leaning one way over the other, but maybe I missed those threads. Frankly I find your allegation that our Admins will "tolerate right-leaning political viewpoints" utterly absurd.
In fact, I haven't actually seen any of the blatant political commentary that you and a couple others have complained about. The only blatantly political comments I've seen recently were from some Twitter Status Updates that used to be on the main page before the upgrade and that section was swiftly removed after our Admins were made aware of it. Turns out those twitter rants were from so-called "members" who had joined but never even posted here once, as their post count showed zer0.

I agree Steven.... I don't see much politics here at all. Yeah....there are keyboard cowboys that simply love to argue and start sh!t but I think that's just how society has evolved lately. But again...not too bad here compared to other forums.

Just wanted to thank you guys for "going there". Appreciated.

Any political "stuff" has been quickly and appropriately shutdown as far as I can tell....

Left\Right\center

And while we are at it, let's pause for a round of applause for our Mods and Admin team members. It is a tiresome and thankless job at best and they certainly don't need or deserve to be pecked at in this thread.

And if you find my post to be "sucking up"?

Eat my stick dust....

Lol

Yeah....there are keyboard cowboys that simply love to argue and start sh!t but I think that's just how society has evolved lately.

Olderschool, did you not just refer to Mick Fleetwood recently as an “old man with saggy balls and balding head with long side hair making a fool out of himself.“. I think you have a little keyboard cowboy in you.

Kind of drifting of topic. With regard to forums, FB groups, trolls, and other jerkwad behavior, I saw something very interesting happen when people fled various forums for FB. I'm part of a once very active fishing forum, which had its share of trolls over the years, probably still does. Lots of pro guides used to post on the forum and gave out great information, but quit because of a few bad apples (sounds familiar). When FB groups became big, almost everyone who was sick of the trolls went there because of the lack of anonymity. The idea being, when people use their own names, they will think twice about what they post since they aren't hiding behind a screen name.

What I noticed was that the lack of anonymity only stopped the jerks for so long. The desire to be an ass is so great with some people that using a real identity was no longer a filter. I think that can be seen all over social media these days, people just like being abusive, their own reputations be damned. I kind of miss the days when you had to hide behind a screen name to be a jerk...now people just say stuff to your (virtual) face like it's nothing.

Yeah...but I think most can manage to tell the difference between humour and seriousness....no?

Great point......I almost think people should be forced to put thier address in their sigs. That should weed out some of those who talk tough and act the ass. BTW...I live at 768 Bostwick Dr. Key Largo if anyone wants a cane up thier a$$

Apparently not, but come on man show some sensitivity. I myself am bald headed and what if we have some members here that are old and have saggyness. That is some keyboard cowboy behavior.
