Is DFO Dying Out? ...Nope!

I have been thinking it for a while and I have discussed this exact matter with several other DF members. I think part of the problem is that people are really impolite behind their computers. They tend to be very courageous, rude, and nasty, lacking basic civility and common courtesy on the net and it honestly, bums me out. There's a thread going about proportional sized drums and the OP (cutaway79) asked for opinions and having owned many kits over the years, I gave him mine. The OP comes back with this comment: "I'm not quite understanding the attitude you seem to be giving off." Jesus...I have gone out of my way to write a thoughtful reply to his question and the OP actually has the balls to write that back! Hey arsehole...say thanks for the reply! This is what is wrong with this forum! Yet another DF member that I will ignore (along with the usual suspects) and refrain from contributing to any of his/her threads. Pretty soon, you'll end up with nothing going on with this forum...dead city.

I’ve been here for 18 years, a long-time member of DFI under Harry, whom I met in Indy when he showed me the Tom Mills snare that led to metal Ludwig snares. I’ve played drums for 55 years and rehearsed or gigged over 160 times last year. I visit the forum probably 5 - 10 times a day now that I’m retired. There are not many days out of those 18 years that I haven’t checked in. I have a pretty good record...476 likes out of 6136 posts....no warnings. Overall, I guess I have a pretty good overview of this forum. There’s a tremendous amount of good knowledge here, along with some fluff and the occasional flamers. I like that it’s moderated to reduced the nastiness that sometimes seems to come with those who post anonymously behind a keyboard. I’d hate to see it die off. I don’t see that happening unless the members allow it to. Don’t let it die and then bemoan the fact that it did.

Lets not forget the wanna bees that for the most part seem normal, until they get into the Jack! Usually later in the evening. You can tell by the nasty tone and idiotic response. These guys are here and continue the pattern, but we know who you are....Next drink is on you!....These chuds are not good for the forum.

Do you mean drumbob? He wrote a book about classic drummers? He and I got into it on the phone about a part that he was taking forever to get to me. He was a feisty dude. Can't say I miss him much though.

Oh And I still check in every day and have since Harry's time.
That's correct.....I meant DrumBob. Boy what a tool...when I first joined he chewed me out with a PM because I joked on his age. He definitely couldn't take sarcasm.

What is the full name of Frond? PJFrond or something. A good member that I hope is still here. Anyway another member here would not let up on claiming that Frond was not a drum maker but just assembled asian parts. The guy was relentless and I never understood why. Last I remember is that Fronds store got flooded in Sandy, I think? Ace

Been off for over a month. Doesn't seem much has changed.
Got new phone and forgot password. It wasnt a huge deal for me to get back on.

There was a post on the Vintage Drum Forum, and somebody brought up baseball. I replied about the drums that were for sale, then ribbed the other poster about Yankees / Red Sox, or something like that.
Drumbob replied to me personally, and told me if I wanted to talk baseball, join a baseball forum. The other poster, whom I was teasing, PM'd me and apologized.
I did reply to Drumbob and told him to go read my post again. And to ignore the sentence about baseball if it offended him so much. Never did see a response from him.
You are correct Olderschool, he seems like a piece of work.
Steve

I do wonder if the lack of replys to some threads could be a reason some fall away? I know I can post something and only have one or even NO reply's, but it was seen 200 or 300 times. If your the type of person who needs that constant feedback, that would probably discourage you and you would look elsewhere to get your reinforcement.
I like this site a lot and i probably the best of the drum forums that I frequent. I like to share my love of drumming and my love of acquiring gear with other like minded people. At times I have been attacked on here for selling gear and at times I have been in the vast minority when it comes to the super fandom of some those that are championed here as the greatest. I like to think that I am always respectful and very helpful with the knowledge that I have attained over the years but I have gotten some harsh responses to having some differences of opinion. That is a little as to why my visits have slowed down at times. Usually after some time passes, I'm right back. Drumming is a pure love for me so when I feel unwelcome, I move one to pastures where I am more welcomed. I asked a few of my friends why they stopped getting on this forum and others and some of their reasoning is below:

-Representation: They feel like many of the drummers that they love and model their playing after are ignored or are called "show offs" or "they are overplaying" or "he's ok but he's not Peart" or things along that line. If they like to play like Chris Coleman or Matt Garstka but those guys seem to get little attention or respect, then they too won't feel welcome. Many of them feel like if the drummer doesn't play jazz or classic rock then they don't get much love around here. I have seen it happen before where someone was excited to post some content featuring a drummer who was doing an amazing solo and he was criticized and picked apart. When they come to share their love for someone's playing and they are met with criticism, they become discouraged to keep posting or even post their own vids.

-Also a lot of them feel like if they aren't playing Ludwig, old school Gretsch, Rogers, etc that they get no love and not much enthusiasm in response to their posts. Many think that this is a Ludwig and Ringo tribute site (Said in jest of course).

-When they come to ask questions, some felt like they were spoken down to instead of helped and encouraged. They felt that they got little to no responses or responses that were kind of dismissive.

-Some just felt like they were too young and didn't have much in common with many who are heavy hitters or posters on the forum.

-When I was attacked for "buying too many drums" or "being too indecisive and bipolar" because I like to find gear and sometime flip it, at the time I felt there wasn't any point in going back and forth online when I can just relax and go enjoy my gear lol. This guy attacked and trolled me on different forums, in my inbox and more because he was so bothered that I sold a Mapex Saturn.

-Many feel that the forum is diverse when it comes to different races. Maybe it is but they feel that they didn't see many others like themselves on the forum.

-When I posted a lighthearted and fun post about Drummer pet peeves another guy attacked me on my post and in my inbox and pretty much told me I was unwanted here and just trying to stir the pot. He said "people like you usually fade away after a while" and "keep your opinions to zero or a minimum.....cant handle that, just observe silently or bail out completely. Did you know that anyone can see what topic you are currently viewing (forum suggestion, retitled from "pet peeves" as well as you own topic that got locked because it was so lame, and nothing to do with this forum. toodles..." at the time I had just over 1,000 posts but he was attacking me as some new troll and trying to run me out of town lol. Stuff like that has happened to a few others I spoke to and that soured their view and opinion of the forum.

So......is Paul still dead?
Asking for a friend.

DrumBob and JR Frondelli both flounced off in a cloud of talc about five years ago over something or other.
Even though they were both highly opinionated lovable know-it-alls and often controversial, I sorta miss 'em here because they made for some lively discussion.

Nope. We'll keep it going.

To those that don't understand how someone could get P.O.'d at their post. I've done the same thing. And have come to the conclusion that unless you indicate somehow that you actually are kidding, some people might not get your sense of humor.

As I stated earlier in this thread, I'm new here. I enjoy reading the various perspectives and experiences and you're right, it is hard with the forum or with email/text, to know when a person is kidding or the context unless you truly know that person. Makes it hard to discern. Having said that, thanks for letting me put my 2 cents in and for all the experience and knowledge found here.

Well, my time.away from DFO has given me time to reflect on many things in my life. One of the conclusions I've arrived at is that I believe the whole story about Paul being dead, replaced, etc. The clues are all there and the photos of Paul before 1966 indeed look much different than post 1966.
It's helped put my mind at ease on this topic.

I don’t necessarily think DFO is “dying” but I do feel the dynamic has changed drastically . Like others have said , many of the old DCI forum ( I am one of them) have left and sadly many of them had a lot of experience and expertise . I do find that I see more bickering more than arguing these days . I attribute some of this to the anonymity of the Internet and the fact that our intentions do not translate well through a keyboard at times .
We do have a few members that enjoy posting threads to incite argument and trouble . These people are in the minority fortunately. Personally I used to fall into their trap and now I just ignore those types . I think this forum generally polices itself better than others I participate in and it has a larger percentage of forum members that have more expertise and knowledge and experience.

I do find that discussions on gear itself seem to be diminishing and these seem to be replaced with discussions that incite strong opinion one way or another . The usual individuals seem to keep posting these topics ( and I am sure they know who I am referring to).

Gear discussions seem to get heated at times because we all have our favourite brands and when reading opinions that are contrary to ours can put us on the defensive . Ideally in many cases the people with those contrary opinions are not trying to be argumentative. Their experiences may be different than ours . They may have had a bad experience or their tastes are not the same . That is no reason to make a simple blanket statement like Brand X sucks and then not provide a reason for this statement or be a little more diplomatic in the blanket statement .

Ultimately we are all in here for our love of the instrument we play So let’s talk drums , drummers and music !!

This forum has a history of great members, lots of humor, tons of generosity in many ways and absolutely no racism that I have ever been aware of. After all, we are musicians. Talent obviously comes from everywhere. No one here is more important than anyone else and any comments or mail from one member has to be put in context. Also that offending member won't be around very long. A lot of us might be old timers and not into Metal, but would never discourage any genre. Someone needs to find that thread about funny genres and repost it. That thread was a riot. Ace

Ace makes a good point about Metal....and it would cover other genres as well...

I have no knowledge or interest in Metal. Because of that I don't comment on Metal related threads. But I would never put it down or suggest that the guys playing are not some super talented musicians and that they deserve respect for their talent and ability. It just isn't "my thing".

Honestly, putting someone down for what they are into is really lame and obviously will be a turn off for the guys and gals who dig it.

At the same time if you are into a genre other than classic rock or traditional jazz you may just have to keep up the effort and try and build a following here for the stuff you sre into. It isn't easy when you are in the minority, but it would be well worth it to others who wander into DFO looking to share some aspect of their style or learn something....
