I'm reminded of a Tommy Aldridge instructional video from back in the 80's-90's.
"When you play, you have to look cool". That got a millions laughs from the jazz drummer I worked with.
Whenever I had a gig coming up he'd say, "Just remember to look cool", then he'd walk away laughing.
Well, Aldridge does have a point. When we are up there, on a stage under lights, we are a part of “show biz” whether we like it or not.
I doubt many would hold their gigs for long showing up in worn dirty clothes wearing flip flops saying “I’m an artist, just here to play”

As others have already mentioned, I use a snare stand because it gets my tom in a position that I’d be unable to achieve with bass drum mounting. I like my tom lower and further to the left, and the snare stand achieves what I’m after. Resonance can get choked, depending on the drum and the stand, but FlexFrames solve that problem for me quite easily.

I dont like the way a snare stand sucks the life out my tom and it also interferes where I place my hihat stand .

Just like bell bottoms, this trend re appears every once in a while .
I think it depends on the tom and the stand. My CM 9x13 sounds much better on my Pearl snare stand than on the Atlas mount it came with. It sounds even better with current INDe mount. I don't think my smaller, lighter 8x12 INDe tom would resonate as well on a snare stand.

My workaround to the further to the left of center mounted tom positioning that I also favor is an extended L arm.

Unfortunately, Ludwg no longen offers this part.

I recently found the answer to my prayers with a Gibraltar Stealth docking station. That thing lets me move my tom to any spot, stays still, and doesn’t suck out sound like a snare stand does

Nice set and congrats on owning them for 50 years.

I'm thinking something similar could be accomplished with a Yamaha YESS tom ball mount. You can position a tom just about anywhere you want quickly with those. One of the reasons I bought the Yamaha drum set I did when I did.

Had no mount on this one forever , used a snare stand then migrated to flying off the cymbal stand to drill baby drill! NOS Rail mount puts it up tight and right where I want it sets up fast without additional heavy hardware (which was main goal) Suspension Inde mount on the tom couldn't be happier. No choke on bass or tom never sang better

Totally inspired by my Clubbies… tight and compact

I'm currently using the Tama Classic tom mount stand with my 3-ply Ludwig orphan project, which I'm loving and absolutely recommend over a standard snare stand for the smaller, more position-able basket. Absolutely no loss of resonance or choking at all. The bass drum is a 24, but because the stand uses a more traditional flat base design, it's very easy to get it tight and close (this was just a quick photo before I was breaking it down, I usually have my floor tom in a bit more). I've never had any issues with doing it this way at all.

Once I source a 12x15, 18x16, replacement badges and re-wrap everything in blue sparkle, I do plan on adding a new tom post just to complete the look, though I've had no issues playing without it and still may go back and forth depending on how I'm feeling. Different strokes. I personally like the look of both a basket mounted tom and a bass drum mounted one...people do things for different reasons to suit their needs. Do whatever makes you happy!
