citrus mod...........:D
1968, standard sizes, kit purchased in Indiana where it still resides, unsure of previous owner(s), no apparent mods, sounds as good as it looks. :?

That is a beautiful set! Is there a date stamp in there? I always assumed that citrius mod appeared sometime in early-mid 1969. I would love to know what the date on your set is. I would have to guess late 1968 if it is infact a 68. Thanks for the pics!

You're right, my mistake, they are stamped 1969.

The Abomination:

Should put the gorgeous kits in this thread in perspective ;)

My beloved Luddy mutts. Yes, that's a 28" bass with a 15" tom above it. My shoulders are getting quite the workout. The toms are 3-ply with rings, bass is an old pointy badge marching.

The odd drum over high hat is an old 22" Slingie.

JUST look at the drums, not the doofus playing them! Hey it was hot that day!

Very nice Amber kit Bonzo... Is it a single rail from the factory? In the photo it looks to be more towards the front than usual... I have a red vista kit that was single rail from the factory and I've only seen one other so they're pretty rare... 8)

Mardigras

I believe my Vista set was cobbled together from various drums that Page & Plant drummer Michael Lee snatched up while on tour in the US several years back. He apparently shipped a load of Vistalite drums back to England...

The toms are concert tom conversions.......I don't know the history of the 14x24 bass drum I'm afraid. I've had this set about 4 years now. :)

Frank, I almost pulled the trigger on a clear vista set on the bay that was 22,13,16 with the rail and cymbal mount. It was listed at $900.00 BIN. I should have jumped but did'nt see the need for it. Oh well. Very cool sets.

Here's Zoe Bonham having a rattle on one of her old mans sets:

And some pics of the "old man" in action:

I almost got to play that set..........almost....

Looks like one of the green sparkle sets? The Rack tom looks like a 12x14 maybe? Also looks like clear interiors unless its just the picture.

I'd say John Bonham played THREE different Green Sparkle kits between 1970 - 1973. All with 10x14 toms though..

The kit Zoe is playing in the picture (with the clear interior) is likely an early one.................the famous kit seen at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame (with the granitone interior) most likely a 1971/72 set...?

Maybe..... :idea1:

I think you're right Bonzo...I'm not positive, but I don't think Ludwig started the granitone until 73... 8)

Wow, this is quite a thread....lots of Damen Avenue eye candy....
In the interest of being complete here's a crappy picture of my other Ringo set (13/16/22) that I didn't put in my initial post...

K.O....i haven't been around here too long--i'd like to see just what you have in the way of kits; i see some things here & there, but haven't got the complete picture. i sure like what i see...marko

Dang Liz, 15 pages in 11 days?!
That's gotta be some kind of "Internet World Record".

Ok, I didn't go over the whole thread, but I don't think I've replied here, so if I have, feel free to skip this part of the exercise.

...udduhwyz...

That hunka, hunka burnin' drums I call my kit is a 9 ply Classic Maple, circa 1999.
Finished in a lacquered Cherry stain, the sizes are; 18x14, 10x8, 14x14, 13x3 (with tubies!).

Originally...

...however, a more "realistic" setup has become...

ATTACK OF THE GIANT HI-HATS!

A better shot of the kit, as it currently appears today

(sorry for the Tama snare drum. I was trying to show off some recent acquisitions)

Cymbals are all Paiste.
20" Traditional Light Ride
18" Signature Mellow Crash
13" mixed hats - DE top / Sig. Med. bottom

Heads are (now) all Ludwig Weathermaster except snare drum, which wears an Attack on the batter side.

A little history on this set...
Idea for a new kit came to me around '96 or '97, when I picked up an Earl Kluge album called "Move".
Listened to it constantly for something like 2 weeks and one day, the thought hit me, "it sure would be nice to have a set of drums that sounded as nice as his guitar".

...turn light bulb ON...

Thus, I soon started my search, which lasted probably a year or more. I set out to find something that reminded me of the aspects of that sound that I liked so much.
Figuring I was only gonna find that sound in the higher end line of drums, I tried just about every high end kit on the market (I decided this time, no used...er, "stuff". Its gonna be new) and garnered a pretty good idea of what was being offered back then.
Then one day, I came across a Noble and Cooley kit from their "CD Maple" series.
THE SOUND!
...along with mucho, mucho bucks to own it.
I decided to search around a little more before pulling the trigger and I'm glad I did.
At one shop, I ran across a whole slew of brand new Ludwig Classic Maple kits.
I'd heard about these but had never even seen them before.
...guess what...
THE SOUND!...again.
Long story short, I got the Luddies at a place that no longer exists called "The Drum Garage", which used to be underneath the Seattle Drum School.
I decided on the 'wigs, due to much better price point and a better dealer network.
Since getting them, the sound has only improved with age (even in this short time).
Great drums, glad I got them.

A kit fit for the King, indeed! The Cherry finish is one my favorites---right around the time you got your kit MD did a feature on high end kits from the majors, and Ludwig's entry was a cherry-finish Maple Classic kit. It was pretty eye-catching then, and it still is. The pic of your snare really brings out just how beautiful the Cherry finish is. Very, very nice!
