1972/3 Super Classic 24/14/16/18 in Silver Sparkle (Made for Mel Pritchard from Barclay James Harvest, I rescued from EBay last year and had restored by DM Drums in the UK) kit used to have a 13 tom but that has been sawn in half and used as a timbale by some previous owner :(

Also a 1966 Speed King Pedal which works a treat but squeels like an old door after 10 mins use :?

Ah...silver sparkle...sweet! Nice looking set you got there my friend! :occasion5:
As for the 13" tom's previous owner sawing it in half...he should be drawn and quarter! :D

Got lucky and finally managed to locate an original 1966, 9x13 tom wrapped in silver sparkle, and is now an addition to my original 1964 Down Beat kit purchased back then (phew, am old! )...a set that also has a recently acquired silver sparkle 16x16 floor tom dating back to 1962/63 (there are not date markings inside the shell, but the baseball bat muffler has a piece of red felt--just like my pre-serial piccolo snare drum, also wrapped in silver sparkle, of course! :D --and not white as my other drums were equipped with, so its got to predate those of my own kit's).

Also have three 60s Sped King pedals that seem to require almost constant attention in order to avoid problems like you're experiencing.
Have you been re-lubing the springs housings with a judicious amount of good quality grease? Is somewhat of a pain to tackle this task but helps a lot.
I hardly use them anymore as I prefer the old Tama Camcos and/or original DW 5000 foot pedals (like the latter even better because of its stabilizing bottom plate), which were acquired in the early 80s.
Still, the old workhorse Ludwig pedals will do an splendid job whenever called upon to do so...

Spoons, welcome to the forum, and you have a very impressive collection indeed. Cool story on the 70's 402---I think that Mick Tucker is very underrated as a drummer. I love his playing especially on "Ballroom Blitz," "Fox on the Run," and "Love is LIke Oxygen." Great to have another Ludwig lover from accross the pond join up!

Hey Guys!

Hey Luddite, thanks man, I have quite a bit of Micks old Ludwig gear, the snare and speedking (his old left bass pedal) were his and I have a bunch of hardware and broken speedking parts, he was a great player and very much underrated! Its great to gig his old drum....Actually have a bunch of his old Paiste 602's and a mate of mine has his VERY poorly old 1955 Gretsch Caddllac Green kit in re-furb at the moment

elcid, yeah i'm pleased to have rescued the kit, spent a lot making it playable again, its lovely to see the old shipping labels still attached to the inside of the shells and have mel pritchards initials and manufacture date etched into the re~enforcing hoops, such a shame i never managed to save the other tom! Anyway I'd love to hear how to maintain the old speedking, i use dw pedals as a rule but would love to get the ludwig working properly, just haven't had the courage to take it apart!

Cheers chaps :occasion5:

I cleaned off the bass drum head and scattered a few of the stickers on the 14''er, (those will be cleaned up in the next week or two, But, here is a better pic with yours truely at the helm.

Hammerhead,

Right on! Great kit! Thanks for sharing.

Howard, methinks I see bliss on that face! Beautiful kit, man! :)

dwludzild

Thanks for the compliment on the Website.

Todd is great...and matter of fact was the ONLY dealer in the Country that had a Ludwig single pedal case and I got one from Todd...sent it to me...and protects my Speed King great!

Got nice memos as you can see from the Z's and Todd. GREAT playing the same kit for 40 years...and looking for 40 more!

Rock On!

Here is my Classic Birch kit, with apologies for the lousy picture quality (no digital camera, as of yet.) Normally, I play a 13/16/18/22 configuration---this is everything minus the 18. This has been a great set of drums for me, and I love the Sea Blue finish. One of these days, I plan on getting a matching 14x26, although the fact that they only have three laminate finishes in their catalogue makes that unlikely.

Here is another irredeemably crappy photo, this one a side view of my Clubdate kit. This is an odd setup, possibly a mixture of Clubdate and Classic components---but I like 'em! The kick is a 22" single tension three ply w/rings with rail consolette and large bowties. The 14 is the oddest one of the bunch---a 14x10 three ply with rings and small bowtie lugs. I know that there were some Clubdate, or at least Clubdate style configurations in 13/16/22, but not with 14 in. mounted that I can determine. I'm thinking that it must have been a special order. It's a great sounding tom, favors a pretty tight tuning, but it sings. The floor is what appears to be a Classic---no rings, but I don't believe that it's a six-ply; I'll have to check it out. All three drums lost their badges when a previous owner stripped them and repainted them, unfortunately, and he (equally unfortunately) gave into his inner Barney and painted them purple. It's kind of grown on me, though . The snare is the Import 6x1/2x14 brass model---a great drum for not a lot of money, and sounds nearly as good as my Black Beauty. Currently, I'm using a 5x14 Blacro with this kit---this kit really gets that Mitch Mitchell "Are You Experienced" era sound---high and ringy---now if only I could play like him!
And yes, that's a garage door!

Here is the Zepkit. The purist in me says, "These are 'Ludwigs' in name only," but the drummer in me holds them in pretty high esteem. The bass drum is pretty undeniable---it moves enough air and vibrates my riser enough that I had to stick foam under my CD player to keep it from skipping when I really gave it a hard boot . The snare that came with the kit is history, replaced by an LM 302 import chrome-over-steel that sounds great with proper heads and tuning. The toms took a lot of effort, but benefitted from a change to coated G2's/clear G2's top and bottom. A friend of mine that I jammed with using these has nagged me repeatedly to sell them to him, and he's picky bordering on anal retentive. They're a lot of fun to play, and I got used to the 26" kick a lot quicker than I thought that I would. It's nice to have this configuration without wrapping a ton of money up in it and still having a decent set of playable tubs.
Next up will be pics of the 14/16/18/24 B/O badge Classics that I'm re-doing...

Marc,

That's my kind of bass drum 8)

Luddite,

Tried to wave my magic wand over those pics, so they'd come up a little better, but this new magic wand isn't as "flexible" as the old one was.

Anyway, here's the pics. Not much of a change.

Thanks for the heroic effort, Elvis! Some things are just beyond redemption, this being the case here. I played around with it on my computer and that was the best I could do. Like I said, I need to stop buying drums and get a decent digital camera---perhaps a three month moratorium is called for here  I have some pic's of some of my snares coming up, hopefully they'll turn out better.

Not a problem, Luddite.
I do have to say, I rather fancy those Clubdates.
Odd finish, but I kinda like it (of course, it looks blue in that pic).
I seem to remember a 14" rack tom being available at some point with the Clubbies, although I think this is the first time I've actually seen one on a kit.
Still, 22/14/16 is a pretty rockin setup.
Thanks for sharing.

Elvis

Not a problem, Elvis---here's a Classic Maple piccolo, blacro, and 6 1/2x14 Black Beauty;

...and 5x14 and 6 1/2x14 Birch Classic snares in Sea Blue finish;

Not even white sheets to help with definition can help that camera! Ehhhh, you get the idea, anyway!
I won't post the imports, they're in superdeep subsonic storage!
