Fibes circa 1998 10/12/14/22 needs a little work but I’m happy. Could use a 15 or 16” FT and a 18” bass drum…

This cutesie 13x5 Sound Percussion
snare drum... it's a wooden shell
covered with glossy black wrap,
and it matches my Tama Rockstar DX
kit except for the snare's hardware.
I paid $40 for it from a seller on Facebook Marketplace in my local State (NY).

The drum mics were a separate purchase
as a bundle, from Reverb, $100.
Just building my own collection of
drum mics for fun and learning practice
as a "studio engineer" lol.
Since I already have my CAD D88
kick-drum mic for my kick drum,
I will install this CAD KM212
kick-drum mic inside my 14"
acoustic floor tom, or I'll use it
on my 16" roto floor tom.
And these two little Sampson
Q-tom mics will go on my 10"
and 14" rack roto-toms.

I like this snare. Sound Percussion is
one of them lesser brands, but I don't
care as long as this snare drum sounds
right for me and for my band...

...the Throw-off mechanism looks
kinda toy-ish, but it works smoothly.
It lets me adjust my snare wire tight
without breaking any strands.

The drum has no internal muffler
at all. So I just tightened the snare,
and cranked up the heads...
...resulting in a sharp crisp snappy
sound and a slight "311" rimshot ping.
The original stock heads are intact
and playable, so I'll use them until
I'm ready to get new heads for
this here snare drum.

This snare drum size is perfect for me,
now I'm not bangin my knees on it
while playing my dblkick pedals,
as I like to play my dbl pedals closer together.

This snare looks so simply cute,
I'll probably buy a couple more of
these SP snares and turn them into
"pancake toms", and room decor. lol

2 actually very close together. The Rogers is a 60’s kit with mixed Fullerton, and Dayton drums with a 60’s Powertone. The second is just a13x6 GMS SE snare to go w my CL bop kit.
Still trying to figure out if the snare could be a main ? A bit of a question with cross stick sounds. It is ok for brushes.
The Rogers replaces a large sized set of 58 Slingerlands for when I might need a big sound ?

Got one of the 20" A Zildjian Take Five Reissue rides from MDS that arrived today. Weighs 2208 g; has a very strong stick with a clean fundamental and just the right amount of over-all 'clang' (which I wanted as a contrast to my other rides); a very strong bell and a good crash. A very consonant (as opposed to dissonant) sounding cymbal. I figure I'll platoon it with my 22" K Ride as my main ride, keeping my 22" K-Con Bounce as my auxiliary ride.

This is the first 20" ride I've bought in over 30 years (I've been into 22s since the late '80s). I'm extremely happy with the cymbal — it's in-person sound is about 98% identical to what it sounded like in the MDS video.

Picked up a 1965 Ludwig oyster black pearl 12x8 rack tom in very good condition ; a Pearl mount was installed and original Ludwig mount holes were filled but that mount has been removed and holes are being professionally plugged and original wrap used to finish the repair and the original Ludwig mount holes are being redrilled ; at least the holes driilled were most likely done with a hole saw as they are clean edged ; the wrap is vibrant and it came with COB hoops as a bonus!
This completes my 65 Downbeat 20/12/14 kit....

When I got my niece a kit for Christmas, I also got my sister and her husband sets of the Vic Firth isolation headphones :D
I gave my brother in law his first kit a month ago, I get along great with my sister but its not a polite and thoughtful relationship. More pranks

After not getting paid for the last 2 and a half years on a project we are still trying to get off the ground, I'm finally getting a pay check again, teaching middle school language arts. And the pay is really pretty damn good. So I've started buying all the things I've been drooling over for the past couple of years.

First, is the Ronald Bruner Jr. steel (1mm) over walnut (6mm) snare from Tama.

A 5.5x14 inch beauty, this thing has cut, bite and projection. Loud ballsy and articulate. And the bonus...they just jacked these up by 20% to $600. I ordered it a day or so before they raised the price and also got 15% off. So $425...I couldn't beat it. Thank you to DFO friends Mapex Always for encouraging the purchase and Markkuliini for posting a great YouTube demo video of the drum. That really pushed my decision over the edge.

Then this past Monday (since I'm a teacher and have too many days off LOL) we took a trek out to Dale's Drum shop in Harrisburg, PA. Great store with a lot of excellent gear. I've been aiming for an aluminum snare for quite a while. I knew they had the Tama Starphonic and INDe Kalamazoo in stock. I've listened to waaay to many clips over the past couple of years and I always went back to the Tama. I loved its fatness. And yet...

The sharp definition on this drum was impossible to walk away from. 6.5x14 inch I want to play with some different heads on it, just for fun, but it is perfect out of the box. Great mix of dryness and ring, beautiful body and articulate. I love aluminum.

And then, look what followed me home...

Pearl steel piccolo 3x13. This thing is a firecracker with a ton of punch. Super sensitive, hearty and not afraid to be loud. I was expecting it to be thin and pitchy. Not at all. Better yet, it's used (barely a mark on it), so it was only $90. How do you walk away from that?

Thank you guys for all your drum knowledge which has broadened how I think and allowed me to understand how and why many of the instruments I'm hearing and trying sound the way they do. You guys have helped me make some great purchases. And a huge thanks to Treviso, for being a great guy and sharing his expertise with me.

You guys are all very generous with your time and knowledge. I really appreciate that, so thank you.
