Why does no one sell their Jenkins Martin / Blaemire drums?

I custom ordered a 13/16/24 kit in green sparkle in 2019 and I love it to death. Don't get your hopes up for my estate sale. I'm going to ask my wife to bury me in the bass drum. I've got a matching 10" tom on order. I've considered adding a snare, but indecision on the right size has me waiting.

These are not, to my mind, heavy drums. That said, I've never been particularly preoccupied with weight. I"m just guessing, but they don't feel heavier than wood drums I've played, and they're lighter than my old Vistalite kit. I'm surprised to hear @Mendozart say that the shells are 3.5mm because I would've guessed they were thinner, but he'd know better.

It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine to hear people say that "this X is the best X I've ever heard," but this is my favorite drum set. My bandmates notice and appreciate it. Sound guys and engineers love it. They're just special. They have seemingly unlimited head room if you want to bash the poopie out of them, and they're luscious at low volume. I haven't found a dud head combination yet, but to my mind they sound great with pins over ambs/dips.

I've seen them come up on the used market on occasion, but at prices that make custom ordering a kit to your own specs pretty attractive. I'll say that Scott and David aren't fast on getting their orders turned around, but I take that as evidence of their commitment to build quality and a reflection of the practical reality of running a two-person operation. This observation is to properly temper expectations, not to criticize J-M. Quality takes time, but was well worth it in my experience.

Well, going from a bare 15 shell to a bare 13 shell is a 13% weight savings on both shell and hoop. Going from 16 lugs to 12 is a 25% weight savings. You are entitled to think that is insignificant but my opinion from carrying and setting up is that it is very significant.
Very true , but you are most certainly in a huge minority using those sizes ….

Having owned dozens and dozens of kits, I found that the JM/Blaemire stuff is pretty much on par weight wise with everything else. The biggest difference is really the bass drum, for two reasons.

A. the claw hooks are solid metal, and those alone carry some good weight to them. I found this out after reheading a 22" and realizing how much weight is in those claws. Flipside of that, they fit the hoops perfect and have absolutely no flex making tuning amazing.

B. The fiberglass bass drum hoops are not heavy, but they ARE heavier than a set of wood bass drum hoops. However, I'd never switch them out, because if you really want a test of just how resonant JM shells are, you can tap a fiberglass bass drum hoop and they ring out. Pretty damn cool, if you ask me.

Are they really that good? I've been looking for some one selling theirs for a long while now, with no luck. Seems that everyone who owns them like them too much!
I just heard of them for the first time reading this post. I'll see if I can find some sound samples and expect the answer will get obvious quickly.

Every sound sample I've heard online is either heavily edited, recorded on amateur equipment, or the drums are tuned badly. Nothing one can really rely on.

Shells are thin, 3.5mm as Greg states. Here’s a pic.

Here’s a simple little video I did on my iPhone at my work (tech lab) Original Blaemire 14x24 and an 8x14 Jenkins-Martin snare. ;)

Hey Greg, nice groove! What is the lead time these days for a 4-5 piece set? I'd have them shipped to Josh at INde for his hardware. You may not remember me, but we talked about a set a few years ago and then my life / work situation changed and I couldn't really follow through. Definitely motivated now.

Hey Rob,
I’ll send you a pm a little later today, I’m heading out the door right now.

I just sent Josh an email about this same setup the other day. Sounds like there may be a pretty large lead time right now.

I’m really interested to hear these in the flesh but just about impossible in Australia.
Very keen to hear any samples especially in larger sizes.
One issue for me is my needs are not so common; thicker heads, tree trunk sticks, lower tunings, loud playing. So basically I’m looking for shells that are LOUD, low pitch and hold tune.

I loaned my kit to my buddy Trent when he recorded this. Obviously, it’s produced and whatnot, so not a true representation live sound, but still helpful.
